Recently, four likeable gentlemen came to visit Complemedis: 1 artist, 1 graduate biotechnologist, 1 networker and 1 manufacturer from the construction industry.
They brought a gift:
It contained a golden yellow water and you gave it to us to try.
It tasted bitter and slightly mouldy, like damp forest soil.
The gentlemen explained to us that it was a waste product from the construction industry. How could this be a drinkable foodstuff, if not medicine? The manufacturer now explained that he produced building materials, a kind of chipboard and a kind of brick for masonry. They were trying to make the boards as hard as MDF boards. MDF boards are so-called medium density fibreboards, which consist of wood fibres and resin. They are used under high pressure to make boards for furniture and similar purposes, have a nice smooth surface and are easy to varnish. However, the manufacturer does not use glue, but a different substance as a binding agent, namely:
MUSHROOMS!
And not just any mushrooms, but the divine Reishi mushroom (Ling Zhi - Ganoderma lucidum).
The mushroom mycelium is cultivated to produce the sheets. An actually undesirable side effect of this is that the mycelium forms fruiting bodies, which the manufacturer presented to us:
The mycelium is compressed in the factory under very high pressure. Juice comes out of the plate and is collected, so what was in the tin can was Ling Zhi pressed juice.
So mushrooms can be made into more than just something edible. Tinder fungus was found with Ötzi. Did he take it with him to make a fire, to eat or as medicine? Tinder fungus and other fungal mycelia can be used to make textiles and apparently also building materials.
My roofing cap is made of tinder fungus.

The biotechnologist wants to use his expertise to help anyone who has anything to do with fungi to cultivate and process them, whether in the construction industry, the pharmaceutical or food sector or in agriculture and environmental technology. For example, fungi can clean contaminated soil by dissolving the pollutants. Or agriculture can use fungi to promote the growth of agricultural products, resulting in higher crop yields. It is well known that a large proportion of plants - we are talking about 80% - grow only or at least much better in co-operation with fungi in the soil. Plants form a biocoenosis with the mycelia in the soil. Mycorrhiza is the term used when mycelia form a close connection with the root system of plants, so close that in extreme cases the fungal hyphae even penetrate the cell walls of roots and in this close exchange open up nutrients from the soil for the plants and in return receive the substances from the plant that are important for the fungus.
Complemedis offers a wide range of mushrooms in various forms:
They are used as:
Ling Zhi (Reishi) is not the divine mushroom for nothing. It is an all-rounder and is taken to support multiple life processes in addition to a healthy diet. If you rummage through the specialist literature, you will find many scientific studies that prove its nutritional and physiological value. Among other things, it is said to support the body's defences, have an energising effect and also maintain the day-night rhythm. Hundreds of scientific studies are published every year that prove the beneficial properties of Ling Zhi. There are many entries on Google Scholar, e.g. this one: Foods | Free Full-Text | Nutritional Profile and Health Benefits of Ganoderma lucidum "Lingzhi, Reishi, or Mannentake" as Functional Foods: Current Scenario and Future Perspectives (mdpi.com)
